Poetry: Overcoming Life's Obstacles with Faith, Love and Perseverance

Writer's picture: Navya PrabhakaraNavya Prabhakara

Writing is something that brings me immense joy. Fiction or non-fiction, 500 words or 5,000 words, it never fails to feed me happiness. Recently in my English class in school, we had a unit on Poetry. We had to write poems in class and perform them for a grade. Poetry has never been my thing, and was definitely not within my comfort zone. I took it on as a challenge and tried to do my best. Today, I’m going to be sharing the poem and talking a little bit about it and the message behind it. Here is the poem:

The warm hugs, the soft whispers of love and care

Running to her, giggling and laughing as she picked me up and spun me around

Her pure, genuine smile, that magical, twinkling laugh of hope

It consumed me like a tidal wave, washing over that vibrant, colorful emotion

It gave me strength

But that was before the news

Stabbing me with a poison laced dagger.

Couldn’t think, couldn’t feel, couldn’t accept

And yet her facade never crumbled, never dropped

Her face, one of a warrior, small but mighty

“The greatest warrior is neither the largest or most muscular, but rather the one with the biggest heart and the one who stays standing no matter what” she says

I know that she will conquer this, that she will stay indestructible throughout

For she will fight with her heart, her strength and the love and compassion that creates her

Because she is the strongest and bravest person I know, and she will overcome this

The poem is about my mom, who just two weeks ago had a surgery. The surgery was to remove a growth next to the pancreas to ensure that there is no possible future damage.

In the poem,  I talk about the memories that I have with her, the fear of the outcomes and the faith that everything will be okay. I was able to visit her in the hospital, watch her making progress and recovering. She was discharged a few days ago, and is getting much better by the day.

The road ahead isn’t easy, but the worst is behind us now. I believe that she will completely regain all of her strength fast, and that soon normalcy will return.

In times of uncertainty and hardship, it's important to stay strong no matter what and to keep faith in the power of love and perseverance. Every challenge we face is an opportunity to rise even higher. Someone once said, "In the darkest moments, hope is the spark that lights our way forward." I believe that by holding onto hope and embracing the strength that we carry, we can continue to believe and have faith, overcoming any obstacle life throws in the way, and I hope all of you will believe that as well.
